A history of breakthroughs


1903
- von Tappeiner tried topical eosin and exposure to sunlight in an attemt to treat skin cancer.

1913
- Friedrich Metz-Beyer administered a porphyrin to himself and became photosensitive.

1950s
- It was discovered that human cancer cells could take up porphyrins and become photosensitive.

1980s
- The interest in PDT grew substantially. Clinical trials were performed but general photosensitivity of the patients was a problem.

1993
- The first report on clinical use of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) for precursor-based PDT was published.
- Photocure was founded.

1995
- The first patent application on modified ALA was filed.

2001
- Photocure’s first product, Metvix, was approved in Europe and a licensing agreement was signed with Galderma.

2005
- Photocure’s second product Hexvix was approved in all EU/EEA countries.

2006
- Licencing agreement for Hexvix was signed with GE Healthcare.
