Photodynamic therapy is a two-step process involving the application of a photosensitive drug, followed by controlled exposure to a selective light source, which activates the drug and destroys the diseased cells. Photocure is also employing its photodynamic technology to develop products for the diagnosis of diseases, a process known as photodynamic diagnosis, where the diseased cells are detected by fluorescence.   

Metvix is developed for the treatment of pre-cancerous skin lesions (actinic keratosis) and skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma). Metvix is a non-surgical treatment, based on photodynamic therapy, using light to destroy the diseased cells.

Hexvix is a pharmaceutical product developed for the diagnosis of bladder cancer. By introducing tumour fluorescence, Hexvix is the first pharmaceutical product on the market that improves visual inspection of the bladder. The product is approved in Europe for patients with known or suspected bladder cancer.
