Photocure is conducting clinical studies to investigate the use of Hexvix for treatment (photodynamic therapy) of superficial bladder cancer. Standard chemo- and immunotherapy has only moderate effect and may have severe side effects. PDT may be a good alternative to eradicate superfical bladder cancer and preserve the bladder.
Hexvix PDT is a local procedure for the photodynamic destruction of malignant and pre-malignant lesions. 50 mL Hexvix solution is instilled in the bladder for two hours, and after evacuation of the solution a light catheter is introduced into the bladder for illumination of the whole bladder wall.

Tumour selective destruction is achieved by the preferential enrichment in neoplastic tissue of photoactive porphyrins (PAP). Subsequent exposure to light of an appropriate wavelength generates singlet oxygen, which destroys the premalignant and malignant cells.
Hexvix PDT is in early clinical development to determine efficacy and safety.
