Standard white light colonoscopy is reasonable effective in detection of colorectal cancer and large precancerous polyps. However smaller polyps including flat precancerous lesions can easily be overlooked.
To improve the detection of colorectal precancerous lesions, Photocure is testing colorectal fluorescence imaging to be used in addition to standard white light inspection. The procedure is performed by local instillation of the drug (a precursor of a profyrin photosensitiser) in the colon for 30-60 minutes followed by blue light inspection together with standard white light.
A clinical study is on-going to test a newly developed equipment (coloscope) that is used during the inspection of the colon and to find the right doses of the drug.
